The DCRC 3rd Annual Drive-In Literacy Conference on Saturday, January 27th, was a super opportunity for professional learning, networking, and collegial conversations.
OPENING KEYNOTE | AFTERNOON KEYNOTE Adria Klein, PhD., is program director for early intervention at Saint Mary's College of California. A former president of the California Reading Association, she also served on the International Reading Association Board of Directors. She has her Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico in Reading and ESL. Dr. Klein is an author or co-author of many professional books, book chapters, and articles including Interactive Writing and Interactive Editing, Guided Reading, and Shared Reading, and a number of children's books. Topic: Powerful Small Group Practices: Scaffolding All Students to Read Complex Texts How can teachers scaffold striving readers to understand grade level texts? We will look at a range of practices in guided reading and small groups to scaffold learners including ELs. |

Grades PreK – 2 Topic: Cool, Calm…and you want me to do WHAT? Success for Struggling Learners Presenter: Peggy Campbell-Rush, author Do you have a student in your class who you wonder, “How can I help him/her?” Or “Is there more I can do to help this child learn and succeed?” This workshop will answer questions and give ideas to help students who struggle with things like: sitting still, staying calm, blurting out, organizing supplies, looking and listening to you, focusing, chewing on things and more. Have your questions answered, gain valuable, practical ideas and learn what works in the classroom to help each child become all he/she can be. Grades PreK – 6 Topic: Research-based Resources for Reading Instruction & Intervention Presenter: Jimmy Cole, author The Florida Center for Reading Research at Florida State University creates research-based resources to support reading instruction and intervention. This presentation will review the resources and discuss strategies for implementation. Grades 1 – 6 Topic: Facilitating Student Talk, Thinking, and Interaction Presenter: Claire Riddell Educational Consultant This session will focus on practical strategies to support teachers in the use and refinement of facilitation skills so that classrooms are safe, connected learning communities where students lead the talking, thinking, interaction, and learning! You will be guided through a learning experience, using a selection called “A Tea,” where facilitation techniques will be demonstrated. The session will conclude with a summary of techniques and time for participants to reflect on their own experiences. Learn about free services and supports for educators and classrooms in a hands-on workshop designed to unlock the secrets of the library. Also, there will be cookies. Grades PreK - 1 Topic: It's a Big Deal! Using Big Books to Promote Early Literacy Presenter: Dr. Rob Kelly Senior Lecturer The Ohio State University Intended audience: Classroom teachers, literacy coaches, reading specialists, special education teachers, media specialists In this interactive session, participants will explore the various uses of big books to promote early literacy in the primary classroom. Participants also will learn ways to make big books using classroom materials and students’ writing and illustrations. Grades PreK-3 Topic: Brain Based Reading and Writing Presenter: Peggy Campbell-Rush, author The brain has to be engaged in active learning to have a real impact on memory. We are teaching reading and writing like never before in Kindergarten. Come and join Master Teacher, Peggy Campbell-Rush, as she teaches you about how the brain works and what you can do in the classroom to improve retention of reading and writing concepts. Learn what brain based activities support reading and writing; participate in activities to increase reading “brain power;” learn ideas that will help you teach reading concepts in seconds; and see the connection between reading and writing. Grades K – 6 Topic: Strategy Splash Presenter: Fay Blake ELA Specialist Duval County Public Schools This session will provide teachers with a structure and tool for teaching multiple comprehension strategies within a single Mentor text. Incorporating read-aloud with teacher modeling, this structure once modeled can serve as an independent work center within the classroom. Let’s celebrate the joy and power of the read-aloud and shared reading together! Grades 1 – 6 Topic: Using Queries to Scaffold Comprehension Presenters: Joye Preston and Barbara Pipkin Participants will be introduced to developing a sequence of questions to facilitate student understanding of what was read and promote an organized written response to the text. Grades 4 – 8 Topic: Close Reading Can Be a SNAP! Presenter: Mark Sullivan Founder, Snap! Learning Teachers across the country are raving about the Five Step Lesson Protocol! Learn how the easy-to-use Five-Step plan for using engaging paired text to integrate: (1) Close Reading, (2) the new ESL standards, and (3) science and social studies content. The protocol includes surveying the text, multiple readings of text, vocabulary strategies, paraphrasing, determining man idea, summarizing, quoting and citing text evidence, collaborating and writing, and results in consistently higher test scores.
